Rome wasn't built in a day, but Alamosa was. In 1878, the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad brought in complete buildings, set them in place, and opened for business-all in one day. Rail was laid in each direction over the next decade and Alamosa became a transportation, agriculture, mining and education center. Named for the cottonwood trees along the Rio Grande River, Alamosa is the county seat and a shipping center for potatoes, the principal crop of the San Luis Valley, the world's largest alpine valley. Joe Vigil, legendary coach of Adams State College's successful cross country and track programs, put the town on the national running map. Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve outside of Alamosa features the nation's tallest dunes, some topping 700 feet. World-class bird watching exists seasonally at San Luis Lakes, where the migrating populations include a variety of shore birds, water birds and raptors, including bald eagles and sandhill cranes.
