The Bard of Avon never set eyes upon Colorado, but he figures in its history nonetheless. Utes roamed the Eagle River Valley during the summers to fish and hunt. Outsiders didn't settle here until approximately 1874. A group of English settlers named the area Avon because the valley reminded them of the birthplace of William Shakespeare. Local ranchers ran cattle and sheep, while farmers produced potatoes, peas and lettuce. The town is notable for its novel approach to traffic control. Avon is the site of the country's longest wide-node, narrow-link road (Avon Road), which features five roundabouts that replaced three stoplights and a pair of stop signs. Avon is even more famous for Bob the Bridge. When a new bridge was built across the Eagle River, the town council couldn't decide on a name, so a contest was held. When Bob won, the bridge got a name and the town got lots of publicity.
