Boulder is the only city in Colorado with an aura. Southern Arapahoes lived near Haystack Mountain before prospectors settled Red Rocks, near Boulder Canyon, in 1858. One year later, the Boulder City Town Company sold plots. Incorporated in 1871, town became city in 1882. The state university was built in the 1870s. The post-WWII population surge led city leaders, even then, to focus on preserving the area's natural beauty and attracting environmentally friendly businesses. A running and cycling mecca since the early 1970s, Boulder lures world-class athletes to high-altitude trails. Attractions include the Dushanbe Teahouse, a gift from a sister city in Tajikistan; the Chautauqua Park Historic District; E-Town, host of exciting live radio; Leanin' Tree Museum of Western Art, with an extensive collection; the National Center for Atmospheric Research, housed in a building designed by I.M. Pei; and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, home of the Atomic Clock.
