Although many towns in Colorado rely on the potato as a cash crop, Carbondale rightfully recognizes the tuber's importance with a Potato Day celebration, an annual fixture of the community calendar. The discovery of gold and silver in the mountains around Aspen in 1879 brought a flood of prospectors to the Roaring Fork Valley. The first permanent setders in Carbondale were hunters and farmers, who helped establish the town as a vital food supply center supporting the boom towns and mining camps in the surrounding mountains. Carbondale was named after a town in Pennsylvania, in which several of its new residents had once lived.
