Being known as a town on the move is usually a good thing, but Dillon hopes to stay put for awhile. The town has been relocated three times since it was founded in 1881 at the site of a trading post and stage stop east of the Snake River. Incorporated in 1883, Dillon was moved to a spot closer to the depot of the new railroad, which had been built a considerable distance away. Dillon was moved a second time to a more desirable location near the Blue, the Ten Mile and the Snake rivers. Things were fine until 1956, when a growing Denver's need for drinking water prompted a Denver Water Board plan to dam the Blue River to create a reservoir that would be—you guessed it—right smack on top of the town of Dillon. By 1961, the town was growing on its present site on the shore of Lake Dillon.
