Durango has a quintessentially Old West name, but its history is typical of any southwest Colorado town. In 1874, settlers began occupying land ceded by the Utes. Mining in the San Juans led to the creation of Animas City in 1876. The Denver & Rio Grande planned an extension from Animas City to Silverton, but when the town played real estate hardball, the railroad established its own town, naming it after a Mexican city. Recognizing a fait accompli, everyone in Animas City moved. The railroad cinched Durango's status as a regional center supplying the mines and smelting the ore they produced. Equal parts good, bad and ugly, the populace kept things rough and rowdy until the 1893 silver bust, when the town evolved into a shipping center for Animas Valley ranchers and farmers. Today, Durango is a star in the mountain biking world, and the train hauls tourists instead of ore while cyclists race it to Silverton.
