Utes roamed the Eagle Valley every summer to hunt and fish long before the first Europeans explored the area. Kit Carson guided the Fremont party through the region in 1840. Eagle County was carved from Summit County in 1883. Stock breeder William Edwards first laid out the town when an extension of the railroad was completed in 1884. The town was originally called McDonald, but after it was sold for taxes in 1896, the name was changed. Eagle incorporated in 1905 and replaced Red Cliff as the county seat in 1921. The Eagle County Museum documents regional history from the early Native Americans to the present. Traditionally a ranching community, Eagle has recently experienced steady growth in housing and commercial development, stabilizing a population that once fluctuated wildly with the opening and closing of every ski season.
