It really frosted Eraser's pumpkin to finish in a fifth-place tie on the National Weather Service's list of the nation's coldest towns in 2000. Self-styled as the "Icebox of the Nation," Fraser takes pride in being a community of human penguins. Unfortunately, the 2000 results weren't an aberration. In recent winters, average low temperatures have ranged between 23 and 27 degrees below zero, pretty balmy compared to the good old days when the mercury plummeted 40 to 60 degrees below zero and the town averaged only 17 frost-free days a year. The Fraser Valley, a hunting ground for Utes and Arapahoes, was frequented by fur trappers and mountain men in the 1820s. The first post office was established in 1850 but the railroad didn't arrive until the turn of the century. Fraser was the site of a German POW camp in 1945-46. The German prisoners worked in a lumber mill.
