Who cares about dinosaurs, mountain biking or apples? The greatest thing about Fruita is Mike the Headless Chicken. Mike, actually a rooster, was eyed as the Olsen family's dinner one day in 1945. Lloyd Olsen performed the hatchet job, but Mike kept crowing, so to speak, for the next 4 Vz years. "Miracle Mike" and his preserved head were studied at the University of Utah, toured the West Coast, New York and Atlantic City, and were written up in Life, Time and the Guinness record book. Fruita began Mike the Headless Chicken Days in 1999 as a fun addition to its heritage celebration. Fruita is a paleontological hotbed, offering attractions such as Dinosaur Journey Museum, Dinosaur Hill Interpretive Trail, and Rabbit Valley Dinosaur Quarry. The city garnered a mention as one of bicycling magazine's top-10 biking spots, thanks to the area's 1,000 miles of singletrack biking trail and the annual Fat Tire Festival.
