Granby is the heart of the Middle Park region in Grand County. The town was founded in 1905 after the arrival of the Denver North West & Pacific Railroad. Granby took its name from Granby Hiller, who was then the U.S. district attorney for Colorado. The town had a short-lived stint as a shipping center until 1908, when the lumber trade declined in Middle Park. With an annual average snowfall of 100 inches, Granby is a winter playground for skiers and snowmobilers. Summer activities center around Lake Granby, which is one of three contiguous bodies of water that form the headwaters of the Colorado River. Lake Granby was created when Granby Dam was built in 1950. The lake is particularly well-stocked and sport fishermen are attracted by its rainbow trout, mackinaw trout, and salmon. The pleasure boats of the Lake Granby Yacht Club share the waters with power boats.
