Grand Junction is the largest city along 1-70 between Denver and Salt Lake City. When the Utes were forced out of Colorado into Utah, their ceded lands were up for grabs. During the land rush of 1881, a town site was staked out in the Grand Valley. Originally called Ute and then West Denver, the town was renamed Grand Junction because of its location at the confluence of the Gunnison and Colorado rivers. The town prospered after the main line of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad extended west in 1887. Irrigation made the Grand Valley a fertile agricultural area, noted for its cherries, grapes and apricots. Discoveries of oil and uranium in the early and mid-1900s added a roller-coaster element to the region's economy. Grand Junction's economic mix now includes light manufacturing and service industries, as well as tourism, which offers everything from digging for dinosaur bones to wine tasting.
