Gunnison has the lowest average temperature of any town in the continental U.S. The Gunnison River Valley was first explored in 1776 by Spaniards seeking a mountain shortcut between their missions in Santa Fe and Monterey. In 1853, Captain John Gunnison surveyed the area for the U.S. government to determine a suitable route for a transcontinental railroad. Gunnison died in Utah a few months later in a skirmish with a local tribe. In 1874, the town of Gunnison was founded at the confluence of the Gunnison River and Tomichi Creek. The town became a major supply and transportation center when gold and silver were discovered in 1879, and it survived mining's decline on the strength of ranching and its role as a supply center. Western State College celebrated its centennial in 2001. Across from campus, on W Mountain, is the world's biggest "W"
