You'll find Gypsum at the confluence of Gypsum Creek and the Eagle River. Land in the Gypsum Valley was surveyed in 1862, but setdement wasn't immediate. William Schliff of Germany arrived in 1881, although the honor of first setder is often accorded in error to O.W Daggett. A post office was quickly established in 1883. By the time the Denver & Rio Grande reached town in 1884, 31 ranches were spread throughout the valley. The town's population was only 50 in 1888. A Gypsum man served as guide for Teddy Roosevelt's hunting party in 1905. Roosevelt received a special permit to hunt deer and elk out of season from Colorado's governor, but the President refused to violate state law. Surrounded by the White River National Forest, Gypsum is a natural center of outdoor recreation. Eagle County Airport in Gypsum is the busiest destination airport on the Western Slope.
