This great silver town ironically was dubbed Leadville to distinguish it from all the places already named after the precious metal. The highest incorporated town in the U.S., Leadville sits near Colorado's highest peak, Mount Elbert. Silver was discovered in 1877. In 1878, the former Cloud City incorporated as Leadville and quickly became Colorado's second-largest city. Way off the beaten track, a city of 40,000 could not be ignored. John Philip Sousa, Oscar Wilde and Harry Houdini were among those appearing at the grand Tabor Opera House. After the silver market crashed, Leadville developed other minerals. The Climax Mine was the world's largest underground molybdenum mine. The past is present in 70 square blocks of Victorian architecture and 20 square miles of the historic mining district. Leadville houses the Smithsonian of mining museums and is world-famous for its International Pack Burro Race and one of the premier ultrarunning and mountain bike challenges, the Leadville Trail 100.
