Meeker's heritage is never out of mind because it's never out of sight. The heart of Rio Blanco County and the White River Valley, Meeker remains a vibrant ranching community. Ranchers still drive their catde and sheep through the middle of town to winter and summer pastures. The Range Call Celebration, held since 1885, is the state's oldest annual rodeo. The Classic Sheepdog Championship Trials annually showcases the herding skills of border collies. The White River Museum, housed in a structure built in 1880 as quarters for Army officers, is packed with Old West paraphernalia, including an extensive antique firearms collection. The town is named after Nathan Meeker, whose political incorrectness as boss of the federal Indian Agency culminated in the Meeker Massacre of 1879. Gateway to White River National Forest and Flat Tops Wilderness Area, Meeker offers everything you can do on two feet, two wheels or four wheels.
