Montrose is almost certainly the only geographical feature of any kind in Colorado to be named for both a goddess and a fictional character. Christened Pomona, after the minor Roman goddess of fruits and fertility, the town was platted in 1881. The official founding occurred in 1882, at which time the town was renamed Montrose, after the Duchess of Montrose, a character in a Sir Walter Scott novel. Montrose's incorporation coincided with the arrival of the railroad, which provided distribution of Uncompahgre Valley produce to distant markets. Local water sources weren't sufficient for agricultural expansion, however, and farmers coveted the Gunnison River in ; Black Canyon. The Gunnison was connected to the Uncompahgre River by the seven-mile-long Gunnison Diversion Tunnel. One of the first projects of the federal Bureau of Reclamation, the tunnel was begun in 1904 and finished in 1909, bringing water to the valley's cotton and sugar beets farms.
