The "Swit2erland of America" is nestled in the San Juan Mountains, the youngest and most rugged peaks of the Rockies. Founded in 1876, Ouray was named after the great leader of the Utes, whose lands once included the San Juans. The entire town is listed on the National Register of Historic Districts and almost all buildings constructed between 1880 and 1900 are still standing. World-class ice climbing distinguishes Ouray from other winter destinations. The Ouray Ice Park in Uncompahgre Gorge is the world's first park devoted to the sport, and its annual Ice Festival features clinics with famous climbers. U.S. 550 between Ouray and Silverton is the most avalanche-prone stretch of highway in America. Passengers are wowed by the spectacular vistas of the Million Dollar Highway, but it's tough for drivers to enjoy the scenery on a narrow mountain road with no shoulders, no guardrails, hairpin turns and falling rocks.
