Need to brush up on your mountain man etiquette? Then pay a visit to Fort Vasquez. Built in 1835 on the South Platte River, Fort Vasquez was an important fur trading post. The fort's significance was short-lived, however, when forts and trading posts began popping up in the region like convenience stores. The adobe structure was abandoned just a year after founders Louis Vasquez and Andrew Sublette sold it in 1841. Fort Vasquez was an old ruin by the time reconstruction of the fort was undertaken in 1937 as a Works Progress Administration project. The task was completed in the 1960s and Fort Vasquez was deeded to the Colorado Historical Society. Platteville is also home to the Platteville Pioneer Museum. Platteville was founded in 1871 after the Denver Pacific Railroad constructed a line in the area. Some residents are descendants of setders who established ranches and farms as early as 1859.
