America's Home of Heroes has survived abandonment, a massacre, a railroad war and labor strife along the Arkansas River. Fort Pueblo, established in 1842, was abandoned following the Indian Massacre of 1854. After the gold rush of 1858, however, Pueblo revived as a smelting center, refining gold, silver, lead and zinc ore. The Denver & Rio Grande Railroad served the region and the Colorado Coal and Iron Company was the largest steel plant west of the Mississippi. Four separate towns—Pueblo, South Pueblo, Central Pueblo, and Bessemer—were incorporated as Pueblo in 1886. The devastating 1921 flood caused a portion of the Arkansas to be confined to a concrete channel. The Historic Arkansas Riverwalk restored part of the river to its original path. Having had as many as four Congressional Medal of Honor recipients living in town, Pueblo is the Congressionally appointed host city of National Medal of Honor Day.
