Mining towns have hogged most of the glory, but transportation centers like Ridgway were no less important to Colorado's growth. Ridgway is the birthplace of the Rio Grande Southern, which was started by southwest Colorado's original mover and shaker, Otto Mears, the "Path Finder of the San Juans." Mears began construction of the rail line in 1890 and Ridgway was established a year later by railroad superintendent Robert M. Ridgway. Absorbing the older town of Dallas, Ridgway serviced the nearby mining towns of Ouray and Telluride and was the railroad's northern terminal, with a roundhouse, water tank and turntable. As roads were improved, the railroad gradually lost business to the trucking industry. The story of the Rio Grande Southern is told at the Ridgway Railroad Museum. Outdoor activities in Ridgway include boating and fishing at Ridgway State Park and hot-air ballooning, horseback riding, and four-wheeling along historic mining roads.
