Considering the ubiquitous presence of the long gun in America's pioneer history, it seems odd that there is only one town in the United States named Rifle. The town was named after Rifle Creek. The facts of the creek's naming vary from story to story, but most involve someone leaving a rifle against a tree. Rifle is located in a large valley at the confluence of Rifle Creek and the Colorado River. A ranching community, Rifle fittingly is a popular base camp for deer and elk hunters during the fall season. Rifle is surrounded by the White National Forest, where the world's largest mule deer herd lives. Rifle State Park features Rifle Falls, a 60-foot triple waterfall with limestone caves beneath. Rifle Falls Fish Hatchery produces about 1.5 million catchable trout per year. In the winter, rock climbing turns into ice climbing along the steep limestone walls of Rifle Mountain Park.
