Trinidad's joked-about reputation as "sex-change capital of the world" isn't much of an exaggeration. More sex-reassignment procedures are performed here than anywhere else in the U.S. Trinidad has undergone a transformation of its own, developing from a high-desert stop on the Santa Fe Trail into a modern town on 1-25. Founded in 1842 by Mexican traders, Trinidad experienced a population boom after coal was discovered in 1862, attracting skilled miners from the East and Europe. Trinidad also became headquarters for some of the West's largest cattle companies. The town still benefits from mining, ranching, farming and the railroad. North of Trinidad is the ghost town of Ludlow, one of organized labor's hallowed sites. In 1914, 20 men, women and children were shot or burned to death by Colorado militiamen, mine guards and private detectives during a strike against coal mines operated by John D. Rockefeller's Colorado Fuel & Iron.
