Looking for a pleasant escape from the urban jungle? Then just hop on 1-70 and head northwest of Denver for an hour-and-a-half until you reach...Denver. The 67-mile drive actually takes you to Winter Park, but since Winter Park Resort is owned by the City and County of Denver, you're back in Denver! Winter Park started out as West Portal, named for its location at the west entrance to the Moffat Tunnel, which opened in 1928. The Denver parks department designated the area a "winter park" when it opened the ski area in 1940. Winter Park Resort is the home of the National Sports Center for the Disabled, which has sponsored recreational and competitive athletic programs for more than 30 years. The Ski Train, operating every weekend throughout the winter, provides a popular alternative to driving. With 600 miles of mountain bike trails and events like a high-altitude chili cook-off, Winter Park doesn't take summers off.
